Search is not just Google anymore
Your customers still need to find you. They are just finding you in three different places now. They scroll a list of results, they read a boxed answer or ask their phone out loud, and they ask an AI who to hire.
Here is how all three work, in plain English, using one real example so it actually makes sense.
One example we will follow the whole way
Picture a furnace-repair company in Livonia, Michigan. We will call them Maple Street Heating as an example, not a real company. It is a cold January night, a family's furnace just quit, and they need someone fast.
That one family has one need: get the furnace fixed tonight. Watch how they might find Maple Street Heating three different ways, and what it takes to be the business they find each time.
Land in the list
The family grabs a phone and types "furnace repair near me" into Google. Up comes a list of businesses and a map with pins. They scroll, they tap a few, they pick one to call.
SEO (search engine optimization) is how you land in that list and on that map. It is the work that makes Google trust that Maple Street Heating is a real, relevant furnace company in Livonia worth showing.
The analogy: SEO is being in the directory everyone actually uses. Back in the day it was the phone book. Today it is the Google results and the map. If you are not in it, you do not exist to that customer.
Be the answer
Now picture the same family, but this time they do not scroll. They hold the phone up and say, "who fixes furnaces in Livonia?" Or they type "how much does furnace repair cost" and Google shows one boxed answer at the very top, above all the links. In both cases, one business's words get read out loud or put in the box.
AEO (answer engine optimization) is how those words end up being yours. It is the work that makes Maple Street Heating's clear, simple answers the ones Google reads back and boxes at the top.
The analogy: AEO is being the person the whole room turns to when someone asks a question. You are not just in the room. You are the one everyone looks at for the answer.
Be the AI's recommendation
Same family, one more way. This time they open ChatGPT or use Google's AI and ask, "recommend a good HVAC company in metro Detroit." The AI writes back a short answer that names a couple of companies and links to them. If it names Maple Street Heating, that family is already halfway to calling.
GEO (generative engine optimization) is how you become the business the AI names. It is the work that makes AI tools confident enough to put Maple Street Heating in the recommendation.
The analogy: GEO is being the name a trusted friend gives when someone asks, "hey, who should I call for this?" The AI is playing the role of that friend, and you want to be the name it says.
The same thing, side by side
Three ways one customer finds you, at a glance.
| Where the customer is looking | What winning looks like | What it takes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | The list of results and the map on Google | You show up in the list when they search | A fast, trustworthy site and strong local signals |
| AEO | The boxed answer up top and the phone read out loud | Your answer is the one that gets boxed or spoken | Clear question-and-answer content and structured data |
| GEO | The answer an AI like ChatGPT writes | The AI names and recommends you | Consistent, credible information the AI can trust |
Where they look: the list of results and the map on Google.
Winning looks like: you show up in the list when they search.
What it takes: a fast, trustworthy site and strong local signals.
Where they look: the boxed answer up top and the phone read out loud.
Winning looks like: your answer is the one that gets boxed or spoken.
What it takes: clear question-and-answer content and structured data.
Where they look: the answer an AI like ChatGPT writes.
Winning looks like: the AI names and recommends you.
What it takes: consistent, credible information the AI can trust.
How they work together
These are not three separate battles. They build on each other, and they build in order.
SEO is the foundation. First you have to be findable at all. Everything else sits on top of a site the search engines already trust.
AEO makes you the answer. Once you are findable, clear answers get you the box at the top and the voice result, so you stand out instead of blending into the list.
GEO makes you the AI's pick. The same clear, trustworthy information that wins answers also makes AI tools confident enough to recommend you by name.
You usually want all three, and most businesses start with the foundation. Get found first, become the answer next, and earn the AI's recommendation as you go.
One honest note
You do not need to know these acronyms. That is our job. You just need to be the business your customers find and trust, whether they scroll a list, ask their phone, or ask an AI. We handle the SEO, the AEO, and the GEO behind the scenes so you can stay focused on doing the work your customers called you for.
